Everything You Want to Know About Laser Levels

The patenting process is a strict process that insures that one manufacturer does not exactly copy another on an idea or invention. Because of this there are many types of laser leveling equipment and procedures to use them. I'll cover a couple of the more common types, and how they are used and where.

Laser Saw

The first thing a person need to know is a few safety issues. NEVER look directly into a laser or shine it into another persons eyes. These tools can cause severe damage to the retina of the eye and even sometimes blindness. Make sure that the line of sight from the area that the laser leveler to the work area(s) is clear, you don't want to inadvertently block a line that is being projected on a surface.

Laser Saw

There are two types that dominate the market today, a tripod mounted unit is more expensive, but when it comes to accuracy, it cannot be beat. A larger laser like this will also be useful in larger areas or outside. The tripods available will also telescope making height adjustment possible, this is good when installing a drop ceiling. The hand held models are much more affordable, but the accuracy suffers somewhat, and the distance the laser will "paint" a line is drastically reduced. In most cases the hand held models are sufficient for the average home owner, (unless you are building a home), or casual user. I recommend a level that will set itself up automatically. There are many out there with this feature, and the cost difference is not enough to worry over.

With a tripod mounted laser, clear the area to be worked in of obstructions, and anything that may interfere with the laser beam or tripod. Set up the tripod and insure that it is plum by hanging a pendulum from the center if the mounting surface and adjusting the legs so the pendulum hangs in the exact center of the legs. Most tripods have a lower "platform with an indicator dot or a cross on it. This step can be omitted if the laser leveler is self adjusting. then mount the laser on top of the tripod and turn it on. the rest is up to you.

Hand held lasers are much easier in the fact that most are self leveling, all you will need is a clear surface to set the level on free of obstructions, Place the level on the surface, turn it on, aim it, and go to it! This is why I prefer this unit, ease of use. There are other types, with more and less complicated uses, consider this carefully before buying a laser leveler.
